Alan on his music:
“I don’t really know where it comes from, I mean I know what my influences are, I know who I listen to and what I like so I guess in some way I’ll try and emulate that…But I have never gotten what has really led me to start writing and playing about Americas deep south the way it was all those years ago, something that is so far from my world and frame of reference. About jails, stillhouses, murder, big freightliners and all that. I suppose I’ve always liked the idea of one man with a guitar, like it was him with his back against the wall against everyone else, like he’s not tied down, he can travel and go or see anything he likes. I don’t like it when people question or take the validity away from the music I make simply because I don’t fall into whatever category they think that someone who makes it should. I always think of something I heard once, I can’t remember where, about Ernest Hemingway…When you read the ‘Old Man and the Sea,’ and you like it , but then you find out that not only was the guy who wrote it not a fisherman but he wasn’t even Cuban, do you like it any less?”
Alan has been on tour for the last year playing guitar for the Montreal Indie band Stars (www.myspace.com/stars) The tour has taken him all across North and South America, Europe, UK, The Netherlands, Asia and Australia. As well as share the stage with artists like Feist and Broken Social Scene and open for British group Coldplay. Keep and eye out for some new material in the Spring/Summer.
Check back soon for updates and shows.
